Our Story

Back to where it started

Founded in 2024 by Jackie and Sheila-Ann, Ladies Who Lawn grew from a shared love of gardening and an even bigger love for helping people. What started as a simple idea over a glass of wine (or two!) quickly became something much more meaningful. We’re all about supporting members of our community with their gardens. Whether you struggle to do it yourself, don’t have the time or simply don’t like gardening, we’re here to help breathe some life back into your garden. From grass cutting to seasonal tidy ups, it’s our job to give your garden a bit more life!

Meet Jackie

How did you first get into gardening?

“I’ve loved gardening for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, I used to help my parents on their allotment, and they even gave me my own little square where I proudly grew my first lettuce! Since then, gardening has always been a big part of my life, from looking after my own garden to helping manage my ageing father’s garden too. These days, I also have my own allotment here in Bedford, where I enjoy growing my own vegetables.”

What's your favourite part of Ladies Who Lawn?

“That’s a difficult question, because I have so many favourites! Above all, my favourite part is meeting our lovely clients, I feel very privileged to be allowed to work in their gardens, as each one is so very different and personal to them. Not only that, but I get to work with my best friend, Sheila-Ann, who I’ve known for over 20 years! To be able to use my passion of gardening to help those in the community gives me an immense amount of pride, and I can’t wait to see where the rest of this journey takes us.”

What do you love most about gardening?

“I love watching a garden change as the seasons come and go. Seeing plants grow, thrive, and transform throughout the year is incredibly rewarding. Being outside in the fresh air and surrounded by nature feels like such a privilege, and it’s something that always brings me a real sense of calm. I suppose you could say that being out in the garden is my happy place!”

What's your favourite part of Ladies Who Lawn?

“To make sure you have healthy plants, it’s really important to look after your soil. Each spring, I always recommend mulching your beds with good manure to feed the soil and give your plants a great start to the season. Don’t underestimate the power of deadheading either! Regularly removing old flowers encourages new blooms and can give your garden a whole new lease of life. If you think that’s too much for you, then fear not because we can help you out with our gardening services!”

Meet Sheila-Ann

What inspired you to start Ladies Who Lawn?

“It all started with a pub chat! Jackie and I were catching up over a few beers when we started talking about our passion for gardening and how we’d love to turn our passion into a job. One idea led to another, and before we knew it, Ladies Who Lawn was born. Maybe Sometimes the best plans really do start with a pint!?”

What's one gardening tool you couldn't live without?

“I have a few favourites, but a dual-ended hand fork is my absolute go-to!. One end loosens soil and helps tackle weeds, while the other digs small holes for seeds or plants. It was gifted to me by one of our lovely clients, which of course makes it extra special!”

What's your favourite plant or flower?

“That’s a tough one, because I love so many (even Leylandii can win me over if it’s in the right spot!). But if I had to pick a favourite, it’s my magnolia tree. It’s one of the main reasons we bought our house, and I still look forward to when it blooms every spring.

If you could design your dream garden, what would it include?

“My dream garden would be super wildlife-friendly, so a pond is a must! I’d love it to attract birds, frogs, and all sorts of little visitors, so there’s always something interesting to spot!”
